Toblach (Dobbiaco)
Toblach as the village is known in German (and Dobbiaco in Italien) is situated at the entrance to the romantically wild Val di Landro. The town is famous for its cultural highlights, in particular the Gustav Mahler Music Weeks. In the winter the Tour de Ski comes to Dobbiaco. The town is also venue for other cross country skiing competitions.
During the summer holidays at Dobbiaco there are many possibilities to do beautiful hikes in the mountains with the whole family.
The famous composer Gustav Mahler delighted in his summer holidays in Dobbiaco: “It is wonderful to be here, it sets your soul and body at ease...”. From 1908 to 1910 Gustav Mahler spent the summer months at the Trenkerhof farm in Carbonin Vecchia. In the composing house there he created his Ninth Symphony, the unfinished Tenth Symphony and “Das Lied von der Erde.”

Where is the source of Drava?
The search for the source of Drava river was quite interesting. I knew that the source is somewhere near or in Tobalch, but where exactly that exact location was, was a bit more challenging to find out. First, it was a bit confusing to find this information online. For example, by zooming in on the map provided by the official Drauradweg site for the source of Drava you are really directed to a completely incorrect place and it's a link to something else. On this South Tyrol page for example, they tell you that the source of Drava is "between San Candido/Innichen and Dobbiaco/Toblach". You get similar description from other sources such as "Drava River rises in the Sexten Dolomites between Dobbiaco (Toblach) and San Candido (Innichen), in Italy, at 1450 meters (4760 feet) above sea level", which is not really helpful if you would like to got there.
I was hoping that all of this will be easily fixed buy simply asking people in Toblach about this. Well, this didn't go to well, either. The first three people that I talked to in Tobalch had never heard of the river Drava. I tried talking to them in English, German, and Italian, but no success. I was beginning to panic. How on earth am I going to do this trip, if I cannot even locate the source of the river? The beginning was not looking too good.
Finally, a person in a bookstore - where there were selling maps and guides showed me on a map where she thinks the source could be - but wasn't too certain about it either. If nothing else, she said, that if anyone would be able to answer the question the people at this nature reserve would probably know best. She sent me to The Grand Hotel Toblach. Today the Grand Hotel building houses the Euregio Cultural Center with the impressive Gustav Mahler Auditorium as well as its Guest House, the Upper Puster Valley Music School, the Three Peaks Nature Park House, the Upper Puster Valley Youth Service, and the Youth Hostel.
